Surveillance Camera for Ventilation Shafts
This unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) doesn’t have to worry about the vagaries of the wind, because it spends its life below ground. It is seen here inspecting an airshaft below Piccadilly Circus on the London Underground system. The payload consists of a thermal imaging camera, a laser scanner (for checking the shaft’s ovality) plus a digital camera with “night framing” (for image setup in the dark). There is also a video transmitter to allow the operator to see where the various instruments are pointing.
