The Van Gogh was commissioned by the Bavaria brewery (which is situated in the Netherlands). The shape of the balloon was a routine design, but the artwork was very special. Van Gogh’s self portrait had to be reproduced as exactly as possible. A high resolution copy of the portrait was obtained from the Amsterdam Museum and somehow the two-dimensional picture had to be reproduced in three dimensions. On the computer, the brush strokes were individually isolated and then placed on the three dimensional model. In the finished balloon, every brush stroke is an exact copy of one painted by van Gogh himself, but with some liberties in their position. For example, the hair on the back of his head was stolen from his beard!
