Richard Branson's Concorde
At Bognor Pier on England’s south coast, there is an annual Birdman Competition for flying hopefuls who try to go as far as possible before hitting the water. Richard Branson, who was bidding for the use of the retiring Concordes at the time, decided to enter. With very short notice, an inflatable, helium-filled Concorde was built in record time. It was arranged that Richard would be replaced by a lookalike dummy before launching from the pier, so that he did not really have to get wet and, after the fun, the gas was released automatically, so that it did not become a danger to real airliners.
